Two Cultures: Which One Do You Belong Too?
I am do not think I completely belong to either of the two cultures. I am both and intellectual and a scientist. These two groups are very different from each other and many people fall along the middle. It is hard to separate something so big into only two groups. Snow mentions on page 12 that we need further divisions of the group to better fit individuals. These two groups are commonly misunderstood by each other. They have been going back and forth all throughout history and still do today. But both groups are essential to the further development and advancements in our society. Both are present even on our UCLA campus. Both scientists and intellectuals. We see intellectuals with our art and theatre and english majors and also scientist in our medical fields and engineers. They live amongst each other and many people share qualities from both cultures. This reading and this class will help us to better understand qualities and behaviors of people based on these two groups. This can help us to make connections with our peers and also in future career paths. We need to understand how different people think in order to better understand ourselves.
I liked your comment about how you believe the two groups are commonly misunderstood by each other. I believe that too. I think UCLA is the perfect place to see the diversity amongst both cultures. I think it's important for the development of civilization for there to be a mutual respect and, like you say, an understanding of one another so we can understand ourselves better.
ReplyDeleteI agree that many people fall into the middle as I feel I do myself. I believe that college is the perfect time to explore this and realize that you can do something different than the box you've always been put in. I also agree that both are important and have a place in this world and in order to be a well-rounded individual you should be acquainted with both. I believe both "cultures" can benefit each other by allowing them to view their field of study from a different lens. This thought process I believe will lead to breakthroughs in both fields. This is in agreement with your last sentence about better understanding each other and our society as a whole.
