WEEK 8

Nanotech and Art
Each week I discover more and more about the collaborations of different fields and the effects it has on those fields. In every week I have found that the collaboration of art with another field has a significant positive impact. The same goes for nanotechnology and art. Professor Vesna believes that nanotechnology will be "the paradigm shift that is really going to push us over the edge into the twenty-first century" and I also see this as true (Intro video).

Nanotech and art are coming together the most in our everday lives. This is what makes Nanotech and art is even more interesting since it can be seen in our daily lives all around us. This is due to the nanoparticles that are contained in so many things. This includes glue, coffee creamer, gum, toothpaste, and even sunscreen. The world is surrounded by nanotechnology.  In order to make products like the ones listed above scientists are manipulating products on the nano scale which means, on the scale of less then 100 nanometers, which consists of molecules and atoms. When this manipulation of atoms and molecules happen, the blending of ideas of mathmeticiians and artists is occurring. This blend calls for images created by artists and the calculations of mathemeticians to create the manipulation. 
I believe the collaboration of nanotech and art has had the biggest impact out of all the fields we've learned about so far because it has effected all the other fields as well. It has chemically changed things on one of the smallest level, the molecular level. This has altered the course of medicine and science and many other fields. Nanotech has physically changed products and the world around us. Wether it is to microscopic for us to see or not. Now in conclusion, the world is different due to the new nanoproducts that have been created by scientist and mathematicians, but without the designs that artists bring to them, nanotech wouldnt have been this advanced. But, since this collaboration our world is physically different and will continue to change on the nano scale.

I find it very interesting that many people are unaware of nanotechnology and as a result don't know that nanoparticles are contained in so many things such as glue, coffee creamer, gum, toothpaste, and even sunscreen. Unofrtunately most people are not educated about this form of science/art and they are unaware that the world is surrounded by nanotechnology.

  2. Before these readings, I had no idea what nanotechnology was! I knew it had something to do with technology and science but that is about it. I loved your image of the butterfly! That's such a cool concept that the color of the butterfly is due to nanostructure rather than pigments. I agree with your thoughts that when the manipulation of atoms and molecules occurs, the blending of ideas of mathmeticians and artists form remarkable things! I didn't know that nanoparticles made up so many things. It's truly extraordinary how so many different cultures can be combined with art when looking at the basis of both cultures. Beforehand, I would have never seen art affecting or being a part of so many cultures. Now it is inevitable, I see it everywhere. I will never look at a stick of glue the same again. I really liked your blog, fun to read!

Math and art seem like two separate subjects that would have nothing to do with one another. But in fact, math is a big part of the art all around us today. Without math our world art would not look, sound, or feel the same. When I look around when I'm walking around our UCLA campus I see math in our art everywhere. WEEK 4

Medicine, Technology, and Art  The Material that most influenced my understanding of this topic was the TED Talk by Virgil Wong. Virgil is an artist, technologist, and a researcher and he is using his art to help people's health. We wouldve never thought that art could in fact help people's health, but it does in Virgil's Medical Avatar LLC. I found it interesting in his TED talk how he revealed that people can connect to other people who suffer from similar health problems through this design app that monitors people's health. I feel like this is the most interesting side of how art and medicine can connect in technology, because human relations can be benefited through this connection.
