WEEK 4

Medicine, Technology, and Art  The Material that most influenced my understanding of this topic was the TED Talk by Virgil Wong. Virgil is an artist, technologist, and a researcher and he is using his art to help people's health. We wouldve never thought that art could in fact help people's health, but it does in Virgil's Medical Avatar LLC. I found it interesting in his TED talk how he revealed that people can connect to other people who suffer from similar health problems through this design app that monitors people's health. I feel like this is the most interesting side of how art and medicine can connect in technology, because human relations can be benefited through this connection. For example, war veterans who suffer from similar injuries that Virgil mentioned. 1-alchemy.jpg community-health-1500x938.jpg My knowledge of medical technologies in relation to artist's projects first begins with Leonardo Da Vinci's drawings of The Mechanics of Man. WEEK 3

Robotics and Art One of my all time favorite movies is Transformers . This movie is a prime example about how robotics and art can work together to create something that is super cool for even the general public to observe. Movies fall into an artistic subject with there story line, design, and film production. But the transformers in the movie show how robotics were involved to create these characters that played a major role in this film.  https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.gstatic.com/tv/thumb/movieposters The Transformers is a Science Fiction film and was a box office hit when it came out in theaters. Today I believe that this cross between art and science in film is becoming even more popular. I believe this has to do with our growing use of technology and science in our everyday lives. So, movies that incorporate science and discovery are more popular because more people can connect to the idea. This movie although obviously unrealistic, was relatable with

EVENT 1

Eco-Centric Art and Science Symposium: Prophesies and Predictions image source: my iPhone  At this event Professor Taylor presented a virtual reality experience. This virtual reality took us into the eyes of birds. Still, we cannot fully understand how birds feel about the changing environment reality and the confusion it is causing. But, this reality gives us a much better understanding.  image source: my iPhone Professor Taylor discussed students in Victoria's virtual reality experience. It is a combination of art design, science, and robotics. This project was meant to create awareness about the effects we have on birds and their environment. But, the special thing about this technique is that it incorporates art and science which is why it relates to our course. Professor taylor mentioned it and I would agree with his opinion that, people are more likely to listen to advice or understand better from a virtual reality experience allowing them to feel like how a

WEEK 2

Math and art seem like two separate subjects that would have nothing to do with one another. But in fact, math is a big part of the art all around us today. Without math our world art would not look, sound, or feel the same. When I look around when I'm walking around our UCLA campus I see math in our art everywhere. Our buildings are beautiful structures of art. But without math, they would not be as beautiful. Artists, wether they are musicians, contractors, or artists, all have to use some type of math skill in their work.  http://www.johnmontroll.com/Books/Pages/Origami_and_Math__Simple_to_Complex.html Even just creative art uses math and fractions just to make it more perfect. Straight lines and even parts are big parts of the art of origami. But these techniques seen above in the picture are also in other types of art like painting and drawing. Using fractions and symmetry ensure proportionate art which makes it more appeasing to look at. Math is a big part of why art

WEEK 1

Two Cultures: Which One Do You Belong Too? I am do not think I completely belong to either of the two cultures. I am both and intellectual and a scientist. These two groups are very different from each other and many people fall along the middle. It is hard to separate something so big into only two groups. Snow mentions on page 12 that we need further divisions of the group to better fit individuals. These two groups are commonly misunderstood by each other. They have been going back and forth all throughout history and still do today. But both groups are essential to the further development and advancements in our society. Both are present even on our UCLA campus. Both scientists and intellectuals. We see intellectuals with our art and theatre and english majors and also scientist in our medical fields and engineers. They live amongst each other and many people share qualities from both cultures. This reading and this class will help us to better understand qualities and behaviors
